Digital skills: an overview
Almost every modern job now assumes a baseline of digital competence, even in roles that aren't “technical.” This page maps the general shape of that baseline — not a specific tool list, which changes constantly, but the underlying categories worth being comfortable in.
The core layers
- Everyday software fluency: comfortably using the document, spreadsheet, email, calendar and messaging tools that make up daily work — not mastery of every feature, just confidence and speed with the common ones;
- Working with data sensibly: reading a simple chart or table correctly, understanding the difference between correlation and causation at a basic level, and knowing when a number deserves scrutiny before you act on it;
- File and information organisation: a workable personal system for storing, naming and finding things — a small habit that saves a surprising amount of time over a career;
- Basic security hygiene: strong, unique passwords (ideally via a password manager), recognising phishing attempts, and understanding why multi-factor authentication matters — the small habits that prevent most everyday incidents;
- Working with AI tools responsibly: using AI assistants to speed up drafting, research and routine tasks, while understanding their limits — they can be confidently wrong, so checking important outputs remains a human responsibility.
Why “general” is the right level here
Specific tools rise and fall; the underlying digital literacy is what actually transfers between employers, sectors and even countries. Someone comfortable with structured thinking about data, careful information handling and sensible AI use will pick up whatever specific software a given job uses far faster than someone who only ever learned one tool by rote.
A sensible way to build it
Digital skills are unusually learnable by doing: most people improve fastest by using tools for real tasks and looking things up as they go, rather than sitting through exhaustive courses up front. Pair that habit with the general approach to learning covered on learning how to learn, and progress tends to come quickly.
